A Eugene Fire Department truck responded to a medical emergency involving an unconscious student Monday in Friendly Hall.
The unidentified male student reportedly was knocked out as he ran down a staircase between the first and second stories of Friendly and struck his head on an overhang.
The early-morning incident occurred slightly after 9:50 a.m. as classes were ending. The Department of Public Safety was alerted about an unconscious student, and EFD personnel from Fire Station 13 were subsequently called to the scene to give medical attention.
A DPS cruiser along with the aforementioned EFD response both arrived on the scene to assess the situation by 10:05 a.m.      
Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found the student regained consciousness and determined no serious medical attention was required.
The University Health Center would not confirm whether or not the student had received treatment in its facility.
DPS Sgt. Chris Enquist did state briefly that the student was allowed to go and that there was no concern for the state of his health.  
“There was no need to send him to the hospital. He should be just fine,” Enquist said.
Emergency vehicles left the scene at approximately 10:20 a.m.
As of press time, University officials had made no statement regarding the safety of the staircases in Friendly.
University Environmental Health and Safety Director Kay Coots said that she hadn’t been made aware of the specific incident or of any safety concerns involving Friendly.
The staircase where the incident occurred is a narrow space with less than six feet of clearance between the top stair and the ceiling overhang.
