I don’t know what it is about Chris Crocker, but for some reason I’m drawn to him. Every time the androgenous YouTube sensation uploads another video – usually a close shot of his face, accompanied by some kind of rant – I can’t help but watch.
You may remember Crocker as the guy who gained an immense amount of media attention and 19 million YouTube views for his tear-filled, mascara-smeared, awkward-laughter-inducing video titled “LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!” For two minutes, Crocker pleaded for the media and Britney haters to back off and leave the pop star alone after her disastrous VMA performance. I may or may not have agreed with him.
Fem guys aren’t usually my thing, but for some reason I just can’t look away. His videos are typically about something inane like his new extensions that are glued in to prevent them from being torn out, or how girls love gay guys, yet I inexplicably find myself tuning in to see him rant, rave and contort his face into some kind of weird expression.
And I’m not the only one watching. Crocker consistently draws in millions of views for his YouTube vids. One video, entitled “Best video EVER!” features Crocker’s made-up face in front of beige sheet, and all he does is blink for five seconds. The video has gotten almost 4 million views since it was uploaded a month ago.
Chris Crocker
Even a simple video of Crocker dancing to Danity Kane’s “Damaged” has gotten more than 1 million views. Why do I keep watching?
Maybe it’s the fact that he’s a massive Britney Spears fan like me. He does, after all, have a video of himself lying on his massive collection of Britney memorabilia (he has me beat by a long shot, just so you know).
Or maybe it’s the fact that his videos are brutally honest. Crocker puts himself out there, often in angrily outspoken fashion, talking and ranting about topics like codependency, one-night stands and homophobia, and you’ve got to respect someone who’s willing to go on the Internet and declare to the world that all he needs is a 5-minute stand. OK, so maybe not everyone can respect that sentiment, but still – the kid’s got gusto, or attitude, or…something.
Or maybe I can’t stop watching simply because Crocker is so laughably over-the-top and caricature-like. His behaviors are so insanely cocky and outrageous that laughter is often the easiest and most logical response to anything he says or does.
I just don’t know. There’s something about him, which I can’t pin down or explain, that’s different, because normally I’m totally turned off by fem guys with attitudes who like women’s clothes and makeup.
