Men charged with attempting to steal bikes
Two transient men were arrested early Saturday morning after University public safety officers caught them trying to steal two bicycles near the Hamilton Complex, a Department of Public Safety officer said.
Joseph Monroe Rush, 30, and Joshua Joseph Jones, 23, were each charged with second-degree theft after officers caught them riding away from Hamilton Complex near East 13th Avenue and Agate Street, each pulling a bicycle beside him, DPS officer Royce Myers said. Rush was also charged with possession of burglary tools, specifically bolt cutters.
Both men were handcuffed until police arrived – Rush because he carried a six-inch knife and refused to comply with officers and Jones because he was uncooperative and in the past had threatened officers and claimed he had a firearm, Myers said.
Both men admitted to officers they were attempting to steal the bikes, Myers said.
Officers filled out orders restricting the men from campus, Royce said.
Police arrest student for chair-throwing incident
A drunken 20-year-old University student who threw a chair through a residence hall room window in a failed attempt to get into Tingle Hall, where he lived last year, was arrested and taken to jail early Saturday morning, a public safety officer said.
Calin Christopher Brackin was arrested on charges of second-degree criminal mischief and reckless endangerment and was cited for being a minor possessing alcohol, Department of Public Safety officer Royce Myers said.
Myers said that at about 2:30 a.m. Brackin went to Tingle Hall, in the Hamilton Complex, and attempted to persuade residents to let him in, but they refused. He then started “kicking the hell” out of a large lobby window in an attempt to enter, Myers said.
When that didn’t work, he grabbed a nearby outdoor chair, walked around to the west side of Tingle Hall and threw it through a first-floor window, causing about $300 in damage and barely missing a man inside who was about to crawl into bed for the night, Myers said.
Then, Brackin and a man who was with him ran west toward the EMU, where Myers and DPS officer Zack Hermens caught them, Myers said.
Brackin was released from the Lane County jail Saturday evening. He could not be reached by the Emerald for comment.
UO student arrested for Hayward field bonfire
An 18-year-old student was arrested on charges of reckless burning after he started a small bonfire in the Hayward Field grandstands early on April 16 using pizza boxes, napkins and plastic cups from a recent track meet, Eugene police said.
Trenton Lawrence Hughes, a history major, was also cited with possession of alcohol as a minor but was not taken to jail, Eugene Police Department officer Chris White said.
Department of Public Safety officer Lisa Larkin stomped out the four-square-foot fire, which didn’t spread or damage the grandstands. White said a DPS student employee said he saw Hughes in the grandstands near where the fire was set about 15 minutes before officers arrived. Hughes also had a lighter, White said.
“I guess all I could say is I made a mistake,” Hughes said. “I made a mistake and got in a lot of trouble for it.”
