When discussing the issue of abortion, I am often reminded by those in favor of the procedure that no one is happy about having an abortion. They tell me that even those who procure an abortion, more often than not, do so after much thought and do not feel as though it is something to be taken lightly.
This being said, I am confused by the actions of Planned Parenthood here in Eugene. Even a cursory glance at the company’s Web site shows it maintains that the issue of abortion is very serious and should not be taken lightly. However, despite this solemn veneer, it advertised a celebration of the anniversary of the legalization of abortion in America with song and dance.
If indeed abortion is a very serious issue, and an issue that very few people can be happy about whether they support it or not, is it prudent to honor it with revelry? Would not those of us who disagree with the legality of capital punishment find it deplorable if those who supported it held parties and dances every time someone’s life was taken by the judicial system?
In my opinion, actions like this sink the issue of abortion deeper and deeper into the murky waters of emotions, feelings and arguments and take it further and further from the arena in which it belongs: namely, a philosophical, legal and moral dialogue.
