The Oregon women’s basketball team lost its sixth straight game Sunday, putting a postseason appearance in doubt as the Pacific-10 Conference Tournament looms.
Washington center Regina Rogers had 15 points and eight rebounds, guard Kristi Kingma had 11 points and the Huskies (12-16, 7-11 Pac-10) thwarted a late surge by the Ducks (16-14, 7-11) to win 62-53 at Bank of America Arena.
Oregon once again shot poorly, making just three of 21 three-pointers and 19 of 63 total field goals. Washington made just 20 of 64 field goals but shot 35.7 percent from the field in a 33-point second half, the high half for either team.
“Unfortunately, we’ve been there recently,” Oregon head coach Paul Westhead said of the team’s recent offensive struggles. “It’s not a good film to go back to and say well, I think that happened the last game. It’s disappointing when we don’t generate offense.”
The Ducks started out hot, going on a 13-4 run to open the game, but Washington ground down the pace of the game and swung momentum its way. Free throws by Kingma with 8.7 seconds remaining in the first half gave the Huskies their first lead of the game, 29-28, but Jasmin Holliday’s layup with three seconds remaining gave Oregon a 30-29 halftime lead.
UW continued bothering the Ducks on the defensive end while regaining and extending its lead in the second half. Laura McLellan’s layup with 6:55 remaining gave the Huskies their largest lead of the game (12 points) but Oregon fought back late. Taylor Lilley’s three-pointer with 1:21 remaining cut the deficit to 58-53, but Oregon ran out of time.
Lilley led the Ducks with 14 points, and forward Amanda Johnson added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Despite being tied with Washington in Pac-10 record, the Ducks obtained the sixth seed for the Pac-10 Tournament due to their “quality win” over USC. Oregon will face the Women of Troy on Friday in its first tournament game in Los Angeles.
“We’ll reassemble back on campus tomorrow and get our game plan going and be ready to go to L.A. to win games,” Westhead said.
Washington State 67, Oregon 53
Days after watching a 16-point second-half lead evaporate at UCLA, the Ducks saw another lead slip away at Friel Court.
After Micaela Cocks’ three-pointer made it 29-14 with 9:35 remaining in the first half, Washington State gradually worked its way back. The Cougars tied the game at 38 entering halftime and quashed any hopes of a second-half comeback early, winning 67-53.
“I never thought I’d see that happen again,” Westhead told The Register-Guard. “I thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon. And here we are, 2-for-2.”
Oregon shot a season-worst 26.7 percent from the field (20-75), making just 25 percent of its three-pointers (9-36). The Ducks surrendered 60 rebounds to the Cougars (19 offensive). Five Washington State players had seven or more rebounds on the night.
Cougars guard Jazmine Perkins had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and guard April Cook finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Taylor Lilley was Oregon’s leading scorer with 16 points, while Amanda Johnson had 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.
Washington State’s win improved its conference record to 3-14 (8-20 overall), ninth in the Pac-10.
