For the second consecutive game, Oregon’s Matt Krook struggled on the mound. This time the Ducks were not able to recover.
Oregon saw its five-game win streak end Thursday evening with a 6-3 loss to the UCLA Bruins in Los Angeles. It was the Ducks’ first conference loss since April 8.
The Bruins took advantage of Krook’s shaky command and scored four runs in the first inning. Krook lasted just 1.2 innings and surrendered three earned runs, despite only surrendering one hit.
Isaiah Carranza replaced Krook and allowed two runs in two innings of work. Cooper Stiles eventually silenced the Bruins’ bats, tossing 4.1 innings while allowing just one UCLA base runner and no runs.
Oregon’s first two runs both came on a pinch-hit home run from Phil Craig-St.Louis in the top of the fifth. It was the third consecutive game Craig-St.Louis reached base safely coming off the bench.
In the seventh, Oregon had a chance to cut into the Bruin’s lead. Kyle Kasser drove home Daniel Patzlaff to make the score 6-3, but A.J. Balta grounded out with the bases loaded on the following at-bat to end the inning.
Oregon and UCLA will play the second game of the series Friday at 7 p.m. Cole Irvin is slated to start on the mound for the Ducks.
