The Pacific-10 conference will see all its action in the Pacific Northwest this week, as all four games are being played in northern outposts.
This week’s matchups feature Arizona searching for its first conference win and Washington hoping to change history from last year’s Rose Bowl. Arizona State and Washington State face each other as the only unbeaten teams in the conference. Cal and USC take a break this week, each with a bye, but both will be in action next weekend.
UCLA (5-3, 2-2 Pac-10)
at Washington
(4-4, 1-3), 4 p.m.
The UCLA Bruins head to Seattle this week in search of their sixth Pac-10 win. Washington will not only be seeking a win but revenge from last year’s beating.
The last time these two teams met was at the Rose Bowl last season. UCLA and Washington were each 4-0 and ranked in the top 10 when they went head-to-head on national television.
But when any single player rushes for more than 300 yards, it is difficult to beat his team. The Rose Bowl ended with highlights of Deshaun Foster, as the UCLA tailback helped lead the Bruins to a 35-13 win. Foster ran for 301 yards, the third-highest mark in Pac-10 history and a UCLA record.
The Bruins held Washington to minus-8 yards rushing and snapped the Huskies’ 12-game winning streak.
But that was last year; it’s a whole new season and much has changed. UCLA star quarterback Cory Paus is injured and Husky quarterback Cody Pickett is back in action.
Even with injuries, the Bruins held their own against Stanford over the weekend in a 28-18 win. Matt Moore got the start at quarterback and became the first UCLA true freshman to win his first career start since Tom Ramsey in 1979.
And for the Huskies, it should a passing game, with more arm from Pickett. He only passed for 210 yards in the loss to Arizona State but had 18 completions, adding to his Washington record of 228. Pickett is fourth nationally with 338.6 total offensive yards per game.
UCLA and Washington will meet for the 62nd time with the Bruins holding a slight margin at 31-28-2 in the series. UCLA has won four of the last five.
Arizona (3-5, 0-4) at Oregon State (5-3, 1-3), 1 p.m.
Arizona faces a difficult task this week as they head to Reser Stadium, where Oregon State has won the last two in the series with the Wildcats.
The Beavers have won the last three overall in the series, but the Wildcats have a commanding advantage at 19-5-1 overall.
When these two teams meet, it never seems that the matchup is close; only one of the last six contests has been decided by less than 20 points.
From the moment Arizona strolled into Corvallis last year, it never seemed to have a chance. The Beavers roared out to a 28-0 halftime lead and never looked back in posting a 38-3 victory.
The Oregon State defense held Arizona to 11 first downs, 46 yards rushing, 113 yards passing and amassed 12 tackles for losses.
Things look to be a little different this year as Arizona ranks 12th in the nation in passing offense at 295.4 yards per game.
Wide receiver Bobby Wade has been lighting up the Pac-10 and pulled in nine receptions in the Wildcats’ 21-13 loss to Washington State last week. Wade currently leads the Pac-10 in receptions with more than eight per game, and receiving yards with a 117.5-yards-per-game average.
The Beavers are coming off a 24-13 win over California last weekend, when the Golden Bears were held to 16 yards rushing. Oregon State accounted for four quarterback sacks for minus-49 yards.
This game should be a close one, as history proves to be on the Wildcats side, although they have yet to win a conference game.
