Looking back at the conference weekend in Seattle, it seems sad that
my
definition of
fun in a big city is going to bars. Sure, they are city bars where city
things
happen and city
people drink. But really, it’s not all that special. And I don’t even
want to
think of the city
prices I paid.
I hit the other important Seattle bases, such as Dick’s Drive-In on
Broadway
and Ivar’s on
the waterfront for clam chowder in a breadbowl. I went to the art
museum, but
it closed 30
minutes later and I was cheated out of my one attempt at cultural
enrichment.
As per the conference, I heard many people speak about writing
columns
(including href=”http://www.joebobbriggs.com” target=_blank>Joe Bob Briggs,
who I
didn’t know
was a journalist). What I gleaned from this is that I need to care
about more
things. That’s
not saying I’ll stop writing about entertainment issues, but I need to
make
more original
statements rather than just putting another spin on Joe Millionaire —
even if
I had a blast
writing those columns.
Can I succeed in this endeavor? I don’t know. Hopefully, I will
write
insightful columns for
the paper, and reserve my more base comments for this blog. But
definitely
read my
upcoming column. It’ll be a doozy.
