Oregon needed this in the worst way.
In a cathartic offensive outburst against a quality Purdue Boilermakers team (9-5, 1-2 Big Ten), the Ducks (12-3, 2-1 Big Ten) unloaded for 20 hits to drive in 15 runs in a 15-4 win at Alexander Field in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Oregon scored runs off seven different Purdue arms, and every starter had a hit. Angel Laya (4-5 with two home runs) had the biggest day for Oregon offensively. Drew Smith and Dominic Hellman blasted long balls of their own in the wire-to-wire blowout.
The only blemish of the day came in a four-run third inning, where Purdue third baseman Sam Flores cashed in on an inside-the-park home run when Jack Brooks ran hard into the outfield wall in center.
Aside from that, Oregon starter Cal Scolari had a strong day on the mound, tossing five innings of four-run ball. He allowed the only five hits that the Boilermakers tallied all game, as the Ducks’ bullpen was dominant down the stretch.
Despite the four-spot he let up today, Scolari’s young tenure at Oregon has been excellent as his ERA rests at 2.37.
From there, the positives for Oregon really started to add up. There was Laya, who Wasikowski raved about in the preseason and has emerged as a top freshman in the country, blasting his team-leading fifth and sixth homers of the year. There was Smith’s big day, as the third baseman reached base all five times he came to the plate and has seen his name steadily rise in the lineup, with his batting average resting over .500 15 games into the season. And lastly, there was a steady performance from Oregon’s bullpen, as four Ducks combined to toss three spotless innings in relief of Scolari.
Jarvis Evans struggled in his start for Purdue, allowing five runs in 2.2 innings of work. His successors didn’t fare much better, with only one of eight Boilermakers finishing one inning of work in relief.
But most importantly for the Ducks’ big-picture goals, Oregon won a road series against a solid Purdue team that looks to be one of the toughest opponents the Ducks will have in the conference schedule.
The Ducks scored runs in six of eight offensive innings in a game that should serve as proof of concept for what this offense is capable of. Oregon had been bottled up or at least somewhat contained in most games against quality competition prior, but Sunday, the Ducks’ bats looked comparable to how they did against nonconference teams early in the season.
Oregon will look to ride the hot streak into a midweek matchup with Xavier (5-9) on Tuesday and Wednesday before hosting Indiana (6-8, 1-1 Big Ten) for a weekend series.
