The University of Oregon men’s tennis team had an outstanding weekend at the Easley Memorial Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada and capped it off by sweeping both the singles and doubles championships on Sunday afternoon.
The tournament featured Oregon as well as Boise State University, Oklahoma State University, University of Arizona and University of Nevada Las Vegas, among other schools.
A Duck duo of Bartosz Sawicki and Cormac Clissold entered the tournament as the top-ranked doubles pair and lived up to the billing with an 8-6 win over Nathan Roper and Jurence Mendoza of Oklahoma State University in the doubles quarterfinal. Sawicki and Clissold defeated a duo from Mesa Community College in the semifinals and had a bye in the first round.
The Ducks had their eyes set on an all-Oregon doubles tournament final but missed that opportunity when Jayson Amos and Ethan Young-Smith were defeated by Roper and Mendoza on the Saturday semifinal.
On the singles side, Amos bounced back in a big way for Oregon with a Saturday semifinals win over Ruben Alberts of UNLV followed by a 6-3, 6-0 title-claiming win over Alexandr Cozbinov of UNLV. It was the second consecutive year that an Oregon player defeated a player from UNLV to capture the championship.
“It was a good final day as we brought home three out of three finals,” Oregon associate head coach Jonas Piibor said, per GoDucks.com. “Now, we’ll go home and continue to work hard the rest of the fall. Overall, I’m proud of the way we competed this weekend.”
Oregon will now prepare for their final tournament of the season, the Kramer Classic in Los Angeles, California. The tournament will run Nov. 12-Nov. 15.
