This past weekend, Oregon senior Daan Maasland made a successful run through the preliminary rounds of the ITA Regionals, a five day event in Seattle, Washington. His great outing finally came to an end in a semifinal loss Sunday afternoon.
Maasland, who was ranked 67th in the ITA preseason singles rankings, was ousted by David Wilczynski in straight sets on Sunday. Wilczynksi won the first set 6-3, and the second 6-2.
In his quarterfinal match on Saturday, Maasland captured a clutch 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 victory over No. 92 Jake Douglas of Washington. Douglas was the lone ranked opponent that Maasland faced during the tournament. Douglas’ victory was made more significant in the fact that he was playing on his home court.
Maasland was also entered in the doubles bracket of the tournament. He appeared in the doubles semifinal alongside Oregon sophomore Simon Stevens. The duo won their first three matches before being halted by Nils Skajaa and Vasco Valverde of San Francisco University in straight sets on Sunday afternoon. Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno, who only started playing as a doubles pair this season, advanced to the doubles quarterfinal before falling to Mikus Losbergs and Kasparus Zemaiteles of Sacramento State by score of 8-5.
With regionals now behind them, the Ducks will have their eyes set on the Easely Memorial Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada on Oct. 30-Nov 1.
Oregon will look for more strong doubles play from Amos and Soermano who have now turned out a solid result in back-to-back tournaments, and will also depend heavily on Maasland, their lone ranked player.
