Per Aaron Fentress of CSNNW, Oregon wide receiver Darren Carrington has been suspended for Monday’s National Championship game against Ohio State after failing an NCAA administered drug test. Carrington did not make the trip to Texas.
Carrington tested positive for marijuana according to sources. The Ducks arrived to Dallas this evening.
Carrington’s suspension comes at an inopportune time. Not only because he has been the lead wideout for the Ducks this season, but also because that leaves his teammates shorthanded after losing Devon Allen to an undisclosed, serious knee injury in the opening kickoff of the 101st Rose Bowl.
In the Rose Bowl win over Florida State, Carrington recorded seven passes for a season-high 165 yards and two touchdowns. On the season, he has 37 receptions for 704 yards and four touchdowns.
Now, the Ducks will likely look towards the likes of Byron Marshall, Charles Nelson, Dwayne Stanford and Evan Baylis to fill the void of Carrington. Marshall enters the title game with a team-high 834 yards and five touchdowns, while Nelson and Stanford bring 11 combined touchdowns.
UPDATE
According to Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman, the Ducks already unsuccessfully appealed the suspension. As of now, Carrington has also been ruled ineligible.
