Charles Martinez, who has served an influential role in creating the University’s revised Five-Year-Diversity Plan, will likely be hired permanently as the Vice Provost of Institutional Equity and Diversity, moving up from his interim position.
Nothing has been made final, but the University has confirmed the “intent to appoint” Martinez, spokeswoman Mary Stanik said Wednesday.
No national search was conducted for the position, but Stanik said this is normal for this type of position. Oregon State University Assistant Vice President for University Advancement, and Director of News and Communications Services Todd Simmons, also said that such appointments without national searches shouldn’t raise eyebrows.
Stanik wrote in an e-mail that after open sessions with faculty, staff, community and students about Martinez’s appointment, a final decision will be made before the end of April.
Martinez, an associate professor in the Educational Leadership Department, was named Interim Vice Provost for the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity last year after Gregory Vincent, who formerly held the position, relocated to the University of Texas-Austin in 2005.
