In one week, the Designated Driver Shuttle will again bus drunk students home after parties, according to the ASUO Executive.
DDS has been inactive since the first week of winter term after the ASUO Executive took over the program and fired five employees, including the two co-directors, after DDS broke its probational agreement.
David Goward, ASUO programs administrator and current interim co-director of DDS, said on Jan. 18 that DDS would be up and running by this Wednesday.
The program policy manual isn’t finished yet, but it is in its final stages, Goward said. The group will convene today and put together all the separate parts, Goward said.
From there, the manual will pass through several University officials and the ASUO president and vice president.
“We’re hiring all our staff this week and staff training (begins) next weekend,” Goward said.
Employee interviews start Wednesday and again on Friday. So far, more than 25 students have applied for eight to 10 open spots.
“It’s a good number and a good turnout,” Goward said.
The new group, headed by Goward and Senator Dallas Brown, will employ between 18 and 20 students.
“Everyone who remained on staff who wasn’t fired was offered their jobs back,” Goward said.
Some of them chose not to accept that offer because “they might have disagreed with the ASUO’s Executive, ideologically, on some issues,” Goward said.
The shuttle is slated to reopen on Feb. 6.
