You should have mentioned Oregon’s crosswalk laws in your editorial on pedestrian safety (“Safety on busy Hilyard can’t be ignored”, Editorial, October 31, 2007). Under Oregon law, a pedestrian crosswalk exists at all street intersections, whether there are lines painted on the street or not (see ORS 801.220, www.leg.state.or.us/ors/801.html). If you walk across Patterson, Hilyard, or any other street at an intersection where there is no traffic light, cars must stop to let you cross. If you step out into the street and drivers do not stop for you, they are breaking the law. Call the Eugene Police Department at 682-5111 (put the number in your cell phone) and ask them to enforce the law.
