The Emerald won a 2009 ACP Newspaper Pacemaker award, which is widely considered the most prestigious accolade a college newspaper can receive.
The Pacemaker winners were announced Saturday at the 88th annual ACP/CMA National College Media Convention in Austin, Texas. The Emerald was among six winners in the four-year daily newspaper category.
2008-09 Editor-in-Chief Ashley Chase led the Emerald to its first general excellence Pacemaker, awarded by the Associated Collegiate Press, since 1996-97. The Emerald has now won the award three times in its history, the first being for 1937-38.
The award also recognized Michele Ross, last year’s interim general manager.
Entries are judged on six criteria: coverage and content; quality of writing and reporting; leadership on the opinion page; evidence of in-depth reporting; layout and design; and photography, art and graphics. Pacemakers are selected by the staff of a professional newspaper or news organization, according to the ACP Web site.
The 2009 Pacemaker garnered 228 entrants in three publication categories.
There were 13 finalists in the category of four-year daily newspapers. The others to win the 2009 Pacemaker were the Yale Daily News at Yale University, The Daily News at Ball State University, The State News at Michigan State University, the Minnesota Daily at the University of Minnesota, and the Daily Kent Stater at Kent State University.
