A photographer captures the visual elements necessary to the news, features and sports stories that are printed in the newspaper and presented online. As a salaried employee, hours will vary, but a photographer must be able to work an average of 20 hours per week. Photographers are specifically responsible for:
- A minimum of three assignments per week
- Checking in twice a day
- Checking assignments and budget on a twice-daily basis
- Communicating effectively (be it calling, e-mailing or talking in person) with reporters and editors for assignments and photo possibilities
- Be present for entire duration of photo edit night until all photos are uploaded and prepared for press
- Write cutlines for all your photos in publication or online
- Working effectively with the photo editor
- Working effectively with the design desk in coordinating photo illustrations
- Flexible scheduling and being able to work on-call
- Attending required staff meetings and desk meetings as announced
- Setting individual goals each term to improve journalistic skills
