New University of Oregon President Richard Lariviere delivered the keynote speech at this year’s convocation, which welcomes incoming freshmen and faculty and awards outstanding professors.
Lariviere urged freshmen to “cross the line of the safe and comfortable” and “dare to explore” in their education.
“Your obligation is to discover your passion,” Lariviere said. “Your choice of major does not belong to your parents, friends, guidance counselor, love of your life or, God forbid, the president of the University.”
ASUO President Emma Kallaway and Provost Jim Bean also spoke at Sunday’s event.
