In dealing with the global warming crisis, one necessary response is for society to support more renewable energy. But people in the world’s richer countries cannot avoid a drastic reduction in consumption, say, through less driving, less space for housing per person, less meat eating, more support for organic agriculture and a greater role for the local economy.
Ted Trainer writes in his 2007 book, “Renewable Energy Cannot Sustain a Consumer Society,” that prospects are not good for technological innovation that will allow for storage of enough energy to provide for times when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing hard enough. India and China must rely on fossil fuel for economic development; global warming sets up a clash between the Third World’s right to development (enshrined in international law) and the lifestyles of the richer countries.
I propose a solution to the global warming problem that would involve a freezing of the economic development of the Third World and a contraction of the economies of the richer countries. Also, the U.S. should withdraw from military bases in Asia, so that China and India feel less of a need to build up their war-making potential through increased wealth.
