Baylor halted Oregon’s four-match winning streak Sunday afternoon with a 4-2 victory, giving the Ducks their first loss of the spring season.
Oregon took an early lead but couldn’t hang on as the Bears stormed back for four unanswered points.
Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens were the first to finish in doubles with a 6-3 win. Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno clinched their doubles match 7-5, earning the Ducks the first point of the match.
By the midpoint of set one, the Ducks and the Bears were split, with Oregon leading on courts three, four and six and Baylor leading on the remaining courts.
It seemed the Ducks had a chance at the win when Ethan Young-Smith won his match 6-1, 6-1 and gave Oregon the 2-0 lead. But Baylor retaliated with three straight singles points, leaving the Ducks in a one-point deficit.
Freshman Thomas Laurent took the final singles match to a tie-breaker against his No. 59-ranked opponent, but ultimately lost.
The Bears won the match 4-2 and dashed the Ducks’ hopes of remaining undefeated.
Oregon’s next match will come this weekend against No. 53 Denver in Lincoln, Nebraska. The match is set to being at 1 p.m.
