The only matchup of two teams that are currently 1-0 in Pacific-10 Conference play will occur in Pullman. For Cougar fans, this may be one of the most exciting games to see this year, until Oregon and Washington come to town in November, at least.
In their last meeting, Washington State stunned the Trojans with a 33-27 upset. Then-freshman quarterback Matt Kegel passed for 242 yards and a touchdown in his first start. USC outgained Washington State by 98 yards, but Kegel was steady through the entire game and the Cougars were able to pull out a win.
USC sees things in their favor, with the road team winning the last four games of this series. USC also leads the series overall with a 50-7-4 record.
Washington State and senior quarterback Jason Gesser are looking to work their way back into the top 15 after a loss to Ohio State bumped them down in the polls. The Cougars beat California 48-38 last weekend and need to win to have a chance at the Pac-10 title later in the season.
USC currently holds the longest conference-game winning streak, having won its last six Pac-10 games. Senior quarterback Carson Palmer, who passed Rodney Peete to become USC’s career total offense leader last week, is sixth and climbing on the Pac-10 list.
In a numbers game, USC has the upper hand. The Trojans have given up an average of 12 points per game, while Washington State’s defense is giving up 22 points per game on average. The Cougars are scoring more, with an average of 36 points per game, compared to USC’s 27.
With the teams playing strong thus far, many eyes will be on Pullman on Saturday.
