After a non-stop day of wrestling, only one of Oregon’s 10 wrestlers will compete for a championship today in the Pacific-10 Conference tournament.
Sophomore Shane Webster faces Arizona State’s Curtis Owen for the 174 title tonight.
The No. 2-seeded Webster steamrolled his first opponent
at 174, winning a 22-8 major decision over Cardinal wrestler Haro-
ld Penson.
Facing Oregon State’s Jake Huffman, Webster scored a 10-2 major decision to set up the title match.
Owen pinned one opponent and earned a major decision over the other in the tournament.
Top-seeded Jason Harless faced Cal State-Fullerton’s David Rodriguez in his first match at 133. Harless came away with a major decision, 11-3.
Facing Sun Devil Mike Simpson, Harless lost a 4-0 decision in his second match. Harless wrestles Nate Ybarra from Cal Poly in today’s consolation bracket.
At 125, sophomore Martin Mitchell opened with a 9-7 decision over No. 2-seed Vic Moreno of Cal Poly.
In his second match, Mitchell lost to Cal State-Bakersfield’s Efren Ceballos, 9-6. Mitchell wrestles Oregon State’s Michael
Delaney today in the consolat-
ion bracket.
Senior Casey Hunt began by winning a 9-5 decision over Portland State’s Eddie Dahlen at 141.
Hunt matched up with Boise State’s Gabe Vigil in his second match, with Vigil scoring a 3-1 decision. Hunt will face Oregon State’s Mike Unger today.
At 157, junior Branson Phillips lost a 4-1 decision to Arizona State’s Rocky Smart in his
first match.
In his first match in consolation, Phillips won a 12-3 major decision over Oregon State’s Jeremy Larson.
Phillips continued his winning in the consolation bracket with a 6-1 decision over Cal State-Fullerton’s Dustin Vance. Phillips
will face Boise State’s Ben Cherrington today.
Redshirt sophomore Luke Larwin faced Oregon State’s Matt Ellis first. Ellis, the No. 2 seed at 165, took a 3-2 decision.
Larwin scored a fall in his first consolation match at the 3:30 mark for his fourth pin this season. He wrestles Michael Font of Cal Davis today.
No. 3-seeded redshirt senior Tony Overstake faced Cal Davis’ Nick Davis for his first match at 149. Overstake came out on the losing end of a 5-3 decision.
Overstake faced Oregon State’s Tony Hook for the third time this season in his second match. Hook managed to pin Overstake, the first time Overstake was pinned this year, to win at the 4:58 mark.
Freshman Tony Rolen first battled Beaver Jed Pennell at 184. Rolen lost a major decision to Pennell, 14-2.
In consolation, Rolen lost a 3-1 decision to No. 3-seeded Boise State’s Tony D’Amico.
At 197, sophomore Elias Soto faced Scott O’Bear of Cal State-Bakersfield. Soto earned an 8-3 decision to move on to face Cal Poly’s David Schenk. Against Schenk, Soto lost a 4-2 decision.
Soto next faced Landon Seefeldt of Cal State-Fullerton, losing a 3-2 decision.
Redshirt freshman Neil Phillips won his first match at heavyweight. Wrestling Cal State-Fullerton’s Bryan Webster, Phillips pinned Webster in 3:25 for his second pin of the year.
In his second match, Phillips faced No. 4-seed Dan Howe from Cal Poly, losing a decision, 4-0.
In consolation, Phillips lost a 2-0 decision to Cal Davis’ Jason Paul.
The Ducks sit in fifth place after Sunday with 51 points. Webster is the only Duck wrestling for a title with five others in contention to place third through sixth today.
