The Eugene Police Department is seeking the help of the public in locating a University senior wanted in connection with the March 1 beating of 19-year-old Oregon redshirt Devan Long, who sustained multiple facial fractures and underwent surgery to repair extensive damage.
The suspect, 25-year-old Eric Dylan Jones, is a 6-foot, 185-pound white male with brown hair and brown eyes. Investigators have characterized Jones as the primary aggressor among three individuals who were present at the time of the incident. EPD spokesperson Kerry Delf said the incident appeared to have been an unprovoked attack. Long — a 6-foot-4-inch, 255-pound freshman — has been released from Sacred Heart Medical Center and is recuperating.
Football coach Mike Bellotti said Long has already missed a week of classes because of his hospitalization and is sure to miss all of spring football as well.
“This was not a confrontation between two people,” he said. “Long was attacked because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Bellotti stressed the fact that the attack has nothing to do with Long being a football player, and he said the situation will be especially unfortunate if Long does not finish his classes because of the incident.
“It was a ‘sucker punch’-type attack,” he said.
According to EPD reports, the apartment manager of a complex at the 600 block of East 15th Avenue called to report the incident just before 2:30 a.m.. When officers arrived at the apartment where Long was located, the suspect had fled the scene. Investigators believe Jones, an anthropology major, was at his last known address — 1584 Hilyard St. — as recently as March 12.
Investigators say Jones is aware he is wanted by police, and they advise citizens to call EPD immediately instead of making contact with the suspect.
Anyone with information regarding Jones’ whereabouts should call EPD at 682-5111.
