The NCAA issued a statement shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday saying Hayward Field will remain closed to athletes for the rest of the day. According to the statement, teams were given a revised practice schedule for Wednesday morning to accommodate the missed time.
Many teams relocated Tuesday afternoon to track facilities at South Eugene High School, about six blocks south of Hayward Field.
Competition is still scheduled to begin on time at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The University of Oregon Police Department and the University of Oregon athletic department said they will take additional security measures throughout the event as a precaution, though officials said there is no credible threat of violence.
“We would like to thank local law enforcement for the swift response today and look forward to a successful championship for the student-athletes, coaches and fans,” the NCAA said in its statement Tuesday evening.
Move-out from nearby university residence halls continued throughout the afternoon without disruption. Some students reported professors canceling or rescheduling final exams as the university enters finals week.
