At a press conference at Peace Health Riverbend Annex this afternoon, it was announced that 19-year old Julie Woodworth, the most critically injured survivor of last Thursday’s Umpqua Community College Shooting, remains in critical condition. She will continue to be treated at its intensive care unit for a least another week, and remain hospitalized for several more weeks.
Woodworth was shot 5 times during the incident, and was treated for a severe gunshot wound to the head, along with bullet injuries to her arms and legs which resulted in broken bones.  The wound to the head was impacted from a bullet entering the back of her head before exiting her forehead.
Doctors were able to keep the pressure build-up within her skull low and Neurosurgeon, Dr. Neil Roundy, was pleased to announce that she has had her breathing tube removed yesterday, and that she is able to breathe on her own. Woolworth is also able to move her eyes and arms spontaneously, which doctors view as positive signs to her recovery.
“We are very happy about the progress she has made thus far” said Dr. Roundy “She has made a very incredible recovery. She has been very strong, and has fought very hard to get to where she’s at.”
Woodworth is currently unable to speak. Dr. Roundy mentioned that neurological recoveries can take from months to years and that there is no way of foreseeing the time that her speech and movements will return as well as the extent to which they do.
Woodworth was helicoptered in to Sacred Heart at Springfield about two hours after the shooting, and treated 13 minutes after her arrival.  Woolworth underwent four procedures during two surgeries.
She is a survivor of a mass shooting in Umpqua Community college, when a 26-year old gunman entered a classroom, killing nine people and injuring nine others.
