All across the North American continent, mammoth crowds of raving electronic dance music lovers felt the bass drop as the Mad Decent record label’s 2015 Mad Decent Block Party swept through 16 major cities as part of its 22-show tour — selling out the venues in half of them.
This Saturday, the Mad Decent Block Party will take place at Eugene’s Cuthbert Amphitheater (601 Day Island Road). On Tuesday, the show was declared sold out by its Facebook page, where 8,700 users declared that they will be attending. (The Cuthbert can only hold 5,000 people.)
Although the lineup of artists vary by city, Eugene’s will consist of some of the brightest stars captaining the EDM wave. Major Lazer and Oliver Heldens are among the motley crew, along with Keys ’n’ Krates, RL Grime, What So Not, Brazzabelle and Thomas Jack.
Electronic dancehall group Major Lazer consists of Grammy-nominated record producer and Mad Decent founder Diplo, as well as members Jillionaire and Walshy Fire. Its third studio album, Peace Is The Mission, which was released in June, has elevated the group into international stardom. It became No. 1 in the Billboard charts in the Top Dance/Electronic Albums during the fourth week of its release, and currently holds the No. 2 spot. The lead single “Lean On,” which was co-produced with DJ Snake with vocals from Danish artist MØ, was announced by Spotify as being the most-played song this summer with a tally of more than 406-million plays on the music streaming service.
Major Lazer has been a regular act during the Mad Decent Block Party events — only three cities had the group absent in its lineups. However, only Eugene and Phoenix will party to the pulsating dance beats of Oliver Helden. The 20-year-old hotshot is the mastermind behind the single “Gecko.” Its second version, titled “Gecko (Overdrive),” features vocal work from English singer Becky Hill, making the Dutch music producer a big name on the British Isles. The song took No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart upon its release last summer. It only took another month before his single “Koala” was released, which was then spiced up with vocals from KStewart in “Late All Night (Koala),” to peak at No. 5 in the same charts by the end of the year.
When RL Grime and What So Not take the stage, the crowd will surely have an itch for the addictive heavy drop of “Tell Me,” and be taken away by lines of booming bass — the hallmark of what makes EDM music so physical.
Keys ’n’ Krates will also be set to turn things up under the bronze arch of the Cuthbert Amphitheater with the group’s electronic jam session vibe — blaring out complex interweaving bass and drum patterns, the outfit produces entirely live onstage without the aid of a backing track.
The block party will feature some of the finest emerging talents of the EDM genre with minor hooks and mean beats to be dished out by Brazzabelle, as well as a performance by Australian DJ Thomas Jack, who fuses live instrumentation into his tropical brand of house music.
The 2015 Mad Decent Block Party will take place on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Cuthbert Amphitheater within Alton Baker Park (601 Day Island Rd). Gates will open at 2:30 p.m.; the show will begin at 4 p.m. The show is 18+.
