The lines between audience and stage will be blurred this weekend.
It won’t happen at a stuffy concert hall or theater; it will happen at the intimate and experimental Fenario Gallery.
Traduza Dance Company will get up close and personal when it presents several performances of its collaborative show “All Angles.”
Valéria Ball, artistic director of the Roseburg-based dance group, said the relationship between audience member and performer is cold.
“People just sit there and expect to be entertained,” she said. “We’ve never had a chance to actually dance so close to our audience. It’s a completely different concept than being on the stage.”
Ball believes the performance will lend intimacy to the relationship between audience and dancer because of its visibility.
“There’s always that feeling as an audience member, we don’t get to see everything because it’s easy to hide things on-stage,” she said.
“Here we are, all dimensions. You’ll be able to see us so clearly and it adds that element of excitement to be so close.”
Ball said the dancers of Traduza embraced the idea with a lot of excitement.
“They’ve done dancing in galleries before, where you sort of stay in one place,” she said.
“Our dance is going to be dynamic – there’s dance happening everywhere.”
Dance may be the catalyst of “All Angles,” but it is definitely not the focus.
Ball wanted the focus to be artistic expression. She said there will be something fun for every taste.
Aside from innovative dance, the audience will experience a vibrant mix of photos, video, paintings and music.
Art was created specifically for the show by several local artists, including photographer Ari Denison, painter Jennifer Loghry and videographer Ian Coronado.
Ball said she hopes the show will inspire other artists to come together.
“I really hope it starts some sort of a trend here. It’s really difficult to combine all of those little items but (the end result) is so rich,” she said.

The show will feature a variety of dancers, including dancers skilled in tango, ballet, improv and gymnastics.
Ball has been developing “All Angles” since February. She said it all started while looking through a copy of Eugene Weekly.
“I’ve never seen a town with so many galleries. I live in Roseburg, and we only have one gallery here,” she said.
“I thought, ‘wouldn’t it be neat to make the dancers the art pieces that people go to view?’”
The show evolved from that idea.
Ball approached several galleries in town but “All Angles” was not a well-received idea.
“They were scared. ‘What are you going to do with our art and what are you going to do in our gallery?,’” she said, laughing. “The Fenario Gallery was wonderful from the very start. They thought it was a great idea.”
Finding a location was just the beginning of the battle. Ball said it has been a huge process trying to make the show happen.
She said it was very difficult to find people who would donate their time to the project.
“I was never able to get a grant, so it’s like how do you pay for all of this? All of the artists are donating their time because they really believed in the project,” she said.
Ball hopes students come see the performance and get out of the University box.
“It’s really difficult for University of Oregon students to actually do things outside of the University, I think I’m speaking especially to the dance community. It’s really sad but they’re just so wrapped up in their own thing,” she said.
“I really hope people just get out there and see what other people are doing.”
