This letter is in response to your article “Theta Chi fraternity is cited for second time,” (ODE, Apr. 24) written by Jared Paben. My chapter was not cited for furnishing alcohol to minors, or any other alcohol-related incident this past weekend. I am quite proud to tell you, however, that we had hosted an alcohol-free event the night of the incident. As is customary, our chapter hired professional security services for the party, but because of loud music our chapter was cited for a noise violation. The police did also cite seven individuals for minor in possession, but the police found no alcohol on the individuals or in the chapter house (an individual can still receive an MIP without having alcohol in his or her possession).
Most or all greek social events are alcohol-free, but as I am sure you are aware, many individuals “pre-funk” before attending these alcohol-free events. Obviously, this practice is dangerous and has been a concern for the administration since the greek community was declared alcohol-free in the 2002-03 school year. Unfortunately, that evening of the citation we were not successful in our efforts to turn away those individuals who had consumed alcohol at inappropriate levels before our alcohol-free event. For this, we apologize to Greek Life, the administration and the campus community.
