Interested in living close to campus? Students may have more housing options during the 2007 school year.
A new building project for Eugene-based Neureliuss LLC will add 26 new apartment units to Eugene’s West University neighborhood.
Company manager Jim Anderson Jr. said the apartments, which will be located at 550 E. 15th Ave., will be geared toward students, although anyone who is interested in living there may apply.
“The only people that ever express interests in our properties are students,” Anderson said. “Typically, students are the only ones wanting them. It’s kind of always worked like that.”
Anderson said construction would most likely begin in the fall of 2006 to ensure the apartments will be available for the 2007 school year.
The proposed apartments would be a mix of two- and three-bedroom units and would resemble the University graduate housing on Villard Street.
“I can’t say we’ve finalized (the style) yet … but it will have a fair amount of open landscape space,” he said.
Anderson said the apartments should be attractive to students looking to live close to campus.
“It’s a good location. They’ll be new, and they’ll be clean,” he said.
The apartments will have a number of features including Internet service, cable TV, balconies and a security door that would allow interior access to residents only.
The rent for the proposed apartments has not been set, but Anderson said they will be “competitively priced.”
One of the issues Neureliuss faces before it can start building is finding a new place for two single-family houses and a duplex already on property, Anderson said.
“They’re all on a month-to-month lease and all know that come the end of this summer, those buildings won’t be available for rent,” he said.
If the Anderson family cannot move the houses, they will hire someone else to renovate and relocate them, he said.
If they cannot be moved to a different location, the houses will be torn down and the materials will be recycled whenever possible.
Anderson’s father, also named Jim, founded the building company in the 1950s, Anderson said. The company is named after Anderson Jr.’s Swedish grandfather.
Anderson Sr. has retired, but Anderson Jr. still manages the business along with his brother, John, and his sister, Tricia.
The Anderson family owns about nine different properties with about 100 rental units, Anderson said. All of the properties are in the University area.
The family also owns the Truck ‘N Travel truck stop and restaurant in Coburg.
Bell Real Estate built an apartment complex with about the same number of units two blocks from Anderson’s proposed site in 2004.
