Michael O’Connell Sr., a Eugene developer, now owns the Westmoreland property. He said he’ll continue to target the apartment to students and low-income families, and he will create an on-site child-care center. The rent will increase 10 to 12 percent, which O’Connell said will still be under market prices.
“I would really encourage (current residents) to stay,” he said. “We’ll have an absolutely first class child care center there that should be up and running Sept. 1. … Their community will be pretty much the same as it has been in the past.”
O’Connell plans to complete $1 million in renovations to the apartments, including new kitchens, carpet, windows, doors, light fixtures, plumbing and interior paint. He also plans to create a workout center.
“I know people are pretty concerned about this,” he said. “Perhaps things will be as good or better than they were in the first place.”
