As a salaried employee, hours will vary, but a graphics designer must be ableto work an aver-
age of 10 hours per week. The designer will design computer graphics such as maps or charts, and also work on more creative projects to illustrate stories for publication in the newspaper. The graphic designer will be specifically expected to:
- Have an understanding of newspaper design and be able to design pages.
- Become extremely familiar with the operation of computer design tools, including Adobe InDesign, illustrator and photoshop
- Keep track of graphics, making sure they are finished in time for publication and contain no inaccuracies or errors of grammar, spelling or style
- Produce graphic tags, pictures and infographics for the news desks
- Type in information for graphics, as required
- Search news design pages for ideas
- Work with the design editor, news editors, photographers and other staff members to develop innovative graphic-oriented projects
- Attend required staff meetings and occasional desk meetings
- Set individual goals each term to improve journalistic skills
- Be creative and push innovative ideas
- Complete other tasks as assigned
