The Oregonian reported Friday that Virginia has been added to the men’s basketball non-conference schedule for head coach Dana Altman’s first season.
The Ducks will take on the Cavaliers in Charlottesville on December 17. Oregon has not released its completed men’s basketball schedule, but one other known matchup is against defending national champion Duke. The Ducks will take on the Blue Devils at the Rose Garden on Nov. 27.
Virginia, coached by former Washington State head coach Tony Bennett, went 15-16 last season (5-11 Atlantic Coast Conference). Guard Sylven Landesberg, the team’s leader in scoring (17.3 points per game) and assists (2.9 per game), opted to turn professional after his sophomore season and has signed a deal with Maccabi Haifa in Israel.
Additionally, the men’s basketball team’s tour of Italy was postponed until next season, a media release announced Friday.
“We just don’t have enough healthy bodies to compete,” Altman said in the release. “To play four or five games over there and to have the limited numbers, it seemed better for us to wait a year to maximize that team-building experience.”
The team also announced that, as part of the preparations, “Oregon practiced five times for a total of 11 hours. UO plans to file a waiver with the NCAA to clarify when these practices/hours will be assessed to the program.”
