It’s Dead Week, and that means on-campus study hot spots like the Knight Library and the EMU are filling up fast. Nearby campus coffee shops like Starbucks and Espresso Roma Café are also overflowing with student caffeine addicts. For students looking for a quieter place to study, here are some alternative study spots away from campus:
Burrito Boy on 510 E. Broadway Street
The greasy quesadillas might not seem as academic as the local coffee shop, but Burrito Boy is the perfect alternative study spot for students who need an all-night, quiet study place during the week. Unlike cafés, Burrito Boy serves up affordable Mexican food to satisfy the late-night study munchies. It’s probably not the best place to study on a weekend night though. Open 24/7.
Starbucks on 145 East 18th Avenue
Though the East 13th Avenue Starbucks location remains a popular study spot, this coffee shop just a few blocks away next to Safeway is perfect for coffee addicts who don’t enjoy the jam-packed campus locale. Starbucks employee Kaylin Podoll, a University sophomore, said there is a difference between the two Starbucks that are just blocks away from one another. “It’s not less crowded, but the environment is much different,” she said. “Coming here, it’s getting away from campus and enjoying coffee, and there’s usually a place to sit.” Open 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
No-name Corner Café on East 13th Avenue and Patterson Street
The mysterious sign-less café on the corner of 13th and Patterson has been attributed various names since it opened over a year ago. The nameless exterior might deter some, but according to online reviews, the café offers refillable house coffee for just $1.75 and free wireless access. Open 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Wandering Goat on 268 Madison St.
This Whiteaker neighborhood coffee shop is far enough from campus making it the perfect quiet study spot. Assistant Manager Walter Steeb said he doesn’t understand why people study at the Wandering Goat. “The lighting is not very good and it’s pretty far from campus,” he said. But, University senior David Curry said he studies there because the location is far from campus and away from other studying students.
Other alternative study spots:
Barry’s Espresso Bakery and Deli on 804 East 12th Ave.
Rock Java on 446 East 13th Ave.
Perugino on 767 Willamette St.
