And now, they’ll wait.
After capping off their regular season with a 6-0 victory over No. 6 Oregon State Sunday afternoon, Oregon’s baseball team remains unsure of its postseason fate. The Ducks improved their record to 33-26-1 (11-16 Pacific-10) conference with the series sweep of their Civil War rivals, but won’t learn whether their season will continue until tomorrow morning when the NCAA Tournament field of 64 teams is revealed.
Oregon’s head coach George Horton estimated the Ducks have a 40-50 percent chance of getting in, but a poor conference record and low RPI could prove tough to overcome.
If Sunday’s win was the last time the Ducks took the field in 2011, it was quite a way to end the year. In securing Oregon’s first Pac-10 series sweep of the season, Alex Keudell tossed 8 2/3 innings of shutout baseball to earn his seventh win of the year, and Oregon’s offense filled the basepaths with runners all game.
The Ducks scored single runs in the first and third innings, then added a third in the fifth. Two more runs in the sixth and one in the eighth gave the Ducks plenty of breathing room.
Although he easily could have tallied a complete game victory, Keudell was removed from the game with two outs in the top of the ninth to allow senior reliever Kellen Moen an opportunity to record the final out.
Freshman first baseman Ryon Healy led Oregon’s charge with a three hit game. J.J. Altobelli and KC Serna added two hits apiece, and Brett Hambright had two RBI. As a team, the Ducks had 12 hits.
