After a strong weekend on the court, the Oregon men’s basketball team received more good news Monday afternoon. Senior forward Joevan Catron was named the Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 31 to Feb. 6, league Commissioner Larry Scott announced yesterday.
Catron played a key role in the Ducks’ sweep of Washington State and then-No. 20 Washington over the weekend. The Phoenix, Ill., native averaged 18.2 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals in those two contests.
His 16-point second-half effort against the Huskies helped Oregon to its first win over a ranked opponent since defeating then-No. 17 Washington in Seattle on Jan. 12, 2010. He finished Saturday’s game with 20 points and nine rebounds, which was the eight 20-point effort of his career — seven of those have come this season.
For the year, Catron ranks fifth in the Pac-10 in scoring (16 points per game), while his 6.7 rebounds rank ninth. He has led the Ducks in scoring 14 times this season, while pacing the team in rebounding 13 times.
Catron will lead the Ducks into Los Angeles this weekend for games at UCLA on Thursday and at USC on Saturday.
