At approximately 3:50 p.m., Eugene police and fire units responded to a call that a middle-aged man had collapsed outside the EMU and was not breathing.
University freshman Albert Reynoso@@http://directory.uoregon.edu/telecom/directory.jsp?p=findpeople%2Ffind_results&m=student&d=person&b=name&s=Albert+Reynoso@@ said he saw the unidentified man collapse face down on the sidewalk in front of two men filming. According to Reynoso, the two men, who both declined to be interviewed and wished to remain anonymous, immediately rushed to the man’s side to perform CPR.
Officer Andrew Johnson,@@http://directory.uoregon.edu/telecom/directory.jsp?p=findpeople%2Ffind_results&m=staff&d=person&b=name&s=Andrew+Johnson@@ who was near Gerlinger Hall at the time of the incident, said he was flagged down by a University student. When he arrived at the EMU, he saw the unidentified man showing signs of labored breathing.
Johnson then used an automatic external defibrillator, a device that measures heart rhythms, to determine how to proceed. According to Johnson, the device advised that he apply an electrical shock, which helped stabilize his heart.
Soon after, ambulance and fire crews arrived to transport the man to a nearby hospital.
