Nothing earth-shattering about these picks; as a staff, we’re unanimous in the belief that Oregon will win tonight. How they win, and by exactly how much, is a different story altogether.
Lucas Clark:
I’d like to think that tonight’s game between the ninth-ranked Oregon Ducks and the California Golden Bears will be as competitive as last year’s 15-13 showdown in Berkeley, but I would be sorely mistaken if I thought that would actually be the case.
Oregon has been on an offensive tear the last three games, and even with the success Cal had in slowing Oregon’s ground game last season, it will be way too difficult to duplicate that effort inside Autzen Stadium. I expect to see Cal’s lefty quarterback Zach Maynard do well, but a handful of turnovers will cost the Bears down the stretch.
Final Score: Oregon 45, Cal 21
Andy Drukarev:
When the Ducks and Bears played last season, a low-scoring slugfest broke out. That same script won’t play out this season. While the addition of Buffalo transfer Zach Maynard has dramatically improved Cal’s offense, the Bears defense has taken several steps back – they’ve allowed more than 30 points to three of their four opponents this year. With a bye week to nurse its wounds, Oregon should have no trouble making it four of five. And while Cal will put points on the board, the Bears’ mediocre rushing attack will limit their total offensive output.

David Lieberman:
With both teams coming off bye weeks, neither side really has momentum coming into this game. That being said, Cal suffered a crushing loss against Washington in their last game while Oregon opened its Pac-12 season with an impressive romp of Arizona. The Golden Bears have the offensive weapons to put some points up on Oregon, but not nearly enough. LaMichael James is on top of his game right now, and even Cal’s stingy rush defense can’t completely contain him. Also, in case you haven’t noticed, Chip Kelly doesn’t lose at Autzen Stadium — ever. The Ducks will take a modest lead early, then run away in the second half. Senior quarterback Zach Maynard will have a big day for Cal, but it won’t matter. Ugly uniforms and all, the Ducks will come out on top.
Final Score: Oregon 45, Cal 23
Patrick Malee:
Well here I am, closing this post out and looking like a copycat with my blowout pick. For a long time, I thought this game would be closer than assumed. I looked back at that matchup in Berkley last year and remembered Cal’s athletic defense chasing LaMichael James from sideline to sideline. I remembered how tired the Ducks looked, and how it took that epic fourth quarter drive to keep the undefeated season alive.
I thought of all that, and then I remembered something else: it isn’t 2010 anymore. This game will be played at Autzen Stadium, and the Ducks had a bye week to rest up and treat any nagging injuries. Instead of limping around with the most painful injury of his career, James will come out fully healthy and ready to shred Cal’s vaunted run defense. It’s a different year, with different teams, and Oregon won’t be needing any last second heroics tonight.
