In what has already been a full day of news for the Oregon football program, sophomore quarterback Morgan Mahalak has asked for his release from the program, according to The Oregonian.
The former four-star recruit has been granted his release and will now evaluate all options.
A redshirt freshman, Mahalak spent the 2015 season running the scout team offense and will end his Oregon career having taken zero career snaps.
Had Mahalak opted to return to Oregon, he would have joined a quarterback battle to replace Vernon Adams Jr. As is, the Ducks are set to return junior Jeff Lockie, sophomore Taylor Alie and freshman Travis Jonsen. They are also set to welcome three-star recruit Terry Wilson, as well as Montana State graduate transfer Dakota Prukop.
Mahalak’s father, Geoff, told The Oregonian that Mahalak may stay at Oregon, however.
