MANAGING EDITOR
As the second-in-command in the news room, the managing editor is expected to assist the editor in all decisions. In particular, the managing editor will work with the editors and staff in the news room to ensure that coverage is complete, fair and accurate, and that the
overall quality of the newspaper remains as high as possible.
The managing editor will be specifically expected to:
— Assist and advise the editor in chief in decisions of news room policy and procedure, in the hiring of staff members and in the exercise of staff discipline and rewards.
— Monitor the news daily to keep abreast of all issues that need to be
covered and see that no pertinent news is missed.
— Work with reporters and editors to generate story ideas.
— Coordinate all news room desks to ensure communication between those desks, giving emphasis to connecting the graphics desk to the rest of the news room.
— Help organize larger news projects, such as a series of articles on a subject by one or more writers, a photo essay with an accompanying article, or a major front-page package with photos, graphics and text.
— Assist reporters and editors in writing and in improving their work.
— Line edit all stories prior to publication to identify problems, such as libel, inaccuracy, wordiness or lack of clarity.
— Help keep track of stories in progress.
— Write stories as needed or desired (no specific inch requirement).
— Meet daily deadlines and ensure all staff does as well.
— Attend calendar meetings twice a week, editorial board meetings twice a week and budget meetings at 4:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.
— Keep regular office hours.
— Attend required staff meetings.
— Set individual goals each term to improve your journalistic skills.
Requirements: Must be enrolled as a student at the University of Oregon when the position begins. Must be able to work about 35 hours a week.
