Oregon native Jill Noe scored 18 points and Kylan Loney nailed five three-pointers as the Arizona State women’s basketball team defeated Oregon 78-63 on Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
Noe, who attended Wilsonville High School and hails from Tualatin, sparked the Arizona State offense, providing tough rebounding and defense. It was her first career game against Oregon.
Loney, a native of Ames, Iowa, posted 21 points to lead the Sun Devils.
Sophomore Andrea Bills had a strong offensive night for the Ducks (5-8 overall, 1-3 Pacific-10 Conference), keeping Oregon in the game with 13 points, but just two in the second half.
With Bills held in check by the Sun Devil defense, sophomore Brandi Davis sparked the Ducks, keeping them in the game until the end with a quick hand and tough jump shot. She finished with 15 points to lead Oregon.
Sophomore Kedzie Gunderson, wearing face armor due to a broken nose suffered against Montana on Dec. 19, finished the day with 12 points after posting seven in the first half.
Arizona State dominated the Ducks on the statistical sheet, outrebounding Oregon 41-31 — including 18-15 offensively — and hit seven three-pointers to the Ducks’ six. Oregon was also charged with 20 turnovers.
The Ducks held close to the Sun Devils for much of the first half, capped off by senior Alissa Edwards’ first points of the game, a three-pointer that tied the score at 24 with 5:20 to go.
Loney immediately answered back with a three-pointer of her own, setting off a 16-8 Arizona State run in the final four minutes that propelled the Sun Devils (10-3, 2-2) to the 40-32 halftime lead.
Loney began the second half as strong as she finished the first, knocking down a three within the first minute, leading the Sun Devils to a 7-2 run in the first two minutes of the half.
Oregon got within seven, 63-56, late in the second half after a jumper by Davis, but Arizona State proved to be just too much in the end. The Sun Devils ended the game on an 11-3 run.
Oregon sophomore Amy Taylor started the game, the first of her collegiate career. She ended the game with two points.
The Ducks are now 1-3 since junior All-American candidate Cathrine Kraayeveld went down with a right knee injury in late December.
California visits McArthur Court on Thursday in Oregon’s next contest, with Stanford coming to Eugene for a matchup on Saturday.
