On Thursday, a letter to the editor (“ASUO campaign practices grossly overstep boundaries, are excessively intrusive,” ODE April 1) inferred that the University’s Emergency Notification System, UO Alert! and the phone numbers registered in the UO Alert! system were utilized to send ASUO campaign information to students.
I’d like to clarify that those text messages were not sent from the UO Alert! system. Additionally, the sender of those particular text messages does not have access to the cell phone numbers provided in DuckWeb, as those are used for the UO Alert! system and not shared with any other individuals or groups on campus.
The use of the UO Alert! system is strictly guided by the Crisis & Emergency Notification Policy, which identifies those situations when that system can be utilized — when an emergency, expected or unexpected, poses an imminent threat to the health and safety of students, faculty and staff. A UO Alert! text message will come from the number 23177, not from any other number. For more information on the UO Alert! system, please visit: http://em.uoregon.edu/info/notification-uoalert/
