A University of Oregon doctoral student was killed in a bicycle crash Sunday at 22nd Avenue and Patterson Street, according to Eugene police.
The Eugene Police Department’s Major Collision Investigation Team responded to the scene at 12:39 p.m. after a collision between a bicycle and a vehicle. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the driver remained at the scene.
The victim was identified Monday as Erick Munene Njue, 30, a doctoral student in special education. Njue was a former high school teacher in Kenya.
Njue earned a bachelor’s degree in education and literature and a master’s degree in linguistics from the University of Nairobi before coming to the UO, where he completed an additional master’s degree in education policy and leadership.
Njue’s death marks the second fatal bicycle crash involving a UO student since August 2025, when 21-year-old Elizabeth Cardenas Figueroa was struck on Hilyard Avenue.
Eugene is a Vision Zero community, an initiative aimed at eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries through education and safety improvements. However, according to city data, Eugene has seen an increase in fatal crashes in recent years.
According to crash reports from 2022 to 2024, Eugene recorded 22 fatal crashes in 2024 — the highest total on record. The city recorded 14 fatal crashes in both 2022 and 2023.
Correction: A previous version of this story misspelled the victim’s first name as Erik instead of Erick. The story has been updated. The Emerald deeply regrets this error.

Why do you call it a bicycle crash? The bike has very little relevance, he was killed by a car.
