After multiple rounds of tear gas, flash-bang grenades, pepper balls and other chemical munitions from both federal agents and Eugene and Springfield police, protesters have largely dispersed from the scene.

Agents and officers exited from the south side of the building, where multiple windows had been smashed out. Many ran west and returned to their vehicles on Pearl Street, while others continued south, firing upon protesters and press in the street.

No injuries were immediately reported, though numerous volunteer medics on the scene told The Daily Emerald that they expected many injuries to occur during the dispersal. Likewise there were no immediate reports of detentions or arrests.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. federal agents used tear gas, pepper balls and flash-bang grenades to clear the area around the federal building. This marks the second time tear gas was used on protestors during the Youth Against ICE protest.

Federal agents emerged from the southern entrance of the building after EPD left the scene from where they had previously blocked off the intersection of 6th and Pearl.

Some protestors remain in the area immediately around the building.

EPD spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin shared a statement that reads:

“The activity at the Federal Building at 211 E. 7th Avenue has been declared a riot. Please leave the area now.

There have been breaches in entry  points. Some  protesters  breached the building and went inside. Occupants include civilian staff. Our presence is an attempt to keep things de-escalated.”

EPD’s Mobile Response Team has been identified on scene. Approximately 20 members are in front of the broken windows of the southern entrance.

Approximately 300 protestors still remain on 7th Street, the corner of 7th and Pearl and the plaza of the federal building.

EPD car speakers replay the message declaring the area an active riot and ask protestors to disperse immediately southbound toward Whole Foods, and warn individuals are subject to arrest and tear gas.

EPD has declared the area surrounding the federal building an “active riot.”

Springfield Police Department is also on scene.

Police vehicles have blocked off the intersection of 6th and Pearl.

Prior, two flash-bang grenades were used on the crowd after protestors broke glass at the southern entrance of the federal building.

Tear gas was also deployed.

Eugene Police Department has parked four SWAT vehicles across from the west side of the Eugene Federal Building.

About a dozen officers donning gas masks are lined up outside the vehicles.

EPD has priorly stated it would not involve its self with federal operations.

There are about 300 protesters still at the building with some chemical irritants in the air.

Dozens of protesters crowded against the windows of the federal building, banging on the glass. At least one window broke after a protester kicked it, and protesters began throwing eggs at the building.

At least four Department of Homeland Security agents were visible inside the building — equipped with gas masks — as the Springfield caravan approached.

Meanwhile, cars continued to circle the building, honking as some drivers held “ICE OUT” signs and others chanted.

About 300 protesters are present as a majority of the crowd has moved to the south entrance of the building, where some are banging on windows and others are chanting.

The crowd consists largely of youth as part of the “Youth Against ICE” protest. Hundreds are currently traveling in a car caravan from Springfield City Hall to the federal building.

The Youth Against ICE protest has begun, drawing about 100 additional people to the crowd, which now stands at approximately 300.

Protesters are drawing chalk messages, playing music and waving to passing cars from both sides of 7th Street. As of now, there are no signs of federal agents. A memorial for those killed during ICE operations is set to begin shortly.

Hundreds are also gathered at Springfield City Hall, where a demonstration that began at 2 p.m. is scheduled to include a car caravan traveling to the Eugene Federal Building to join others currently there before returning to Springfield.

Dozens of restaurants, shops and businesses across Eugene and Springfield have closed for the day. Others that remained open are donating proceeds to local immigrant service organizations.

Approximately 150 people gathered for the “Raging Grannies” weekly protest at the Eugene Federal Building. The gathering occurred ahead of the Youth Against ICE protest, scheduled for 2 p.m.

Jan. 30 marks a national day of action calling for no attendance at work or school and no purchases of any kind. The action was inspired by a similar shutdown that took place in Minneapolis on Jan. 23.

Eugene and Springfield are both participating in the national shutdown, with many businesses closed or partially closed.

A rally is set to begin at 2 p.m. at Springfield City Hall, followed by a car caravan traveling to Eugene and then returning to Springfield.

The demonstrations follow a clash with federal agents Tuesday, during which Department of Homeland Security agents used pepper balls, tear gas and flash-bang grenades against protesters.
