Springfield could win $5 million award
The City of Springfield has been selected as one of 20 finalists in an annual contest funded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, according to The Register-Guard.
The contest, known as the Mayors Challenge, rewards cities’ ideas for innovative plans that solve major challenges and improve city life.
Springfield’s competing idea is three to five mobile primary-care medical vans equipped with high-tech equipment that could respond at any hour of the day to non-life threatening medical issues.
EWEB linemen still aiding East Coast power outages
The twelve EWEB linemen volunteers spoke with local media Monday regarding their efforts in helping to restore power to nearly 1.35 million homes and businesses that were left without electricity following superstorm Sandy, according to The Register-Guard.
The EWEB crews are currently aiding areas within 60 miles of Newark, NJ. The crews were scheduled to stay for two weeks, but have already agreed to stay for a third.
LCC names veterans center after former teacher, WWII hero, Medal of Honor recipient
Robert Maxwell, 92, was honored Monday at Lane Community College as a student center for veterans was dedicated in his name, according to The Register-Guard.
Maxwell was a “wire man” who served in the Army from July 1942 to June 1945, and received the military’s most prestigious medal following his actions in battle against German forces in France in 1944. Following his wartime service, Maxwell taught at Central Oregon Community College and then LCC.
The center will have computers, a printer, and a couch for student veterans to relax, study and hold meetings.
