After getting the best of Oregon State in their fall season-opening exhibition doubleheader, Oregon softball prepares to wrap up its autumn play.
Next on the schedule for the Ducks is Corban University, slated for Saturday, Oct. 27. Despite playing a home game the same day as Oregon football, softball could benefit from the return crowds from Autzen if the Ducks take care of business early on the gridiron.
Rarely have Duck fans gotten to see the softball team in action during the fall. Earlier seasons have kicked off play with round-robin tournaments across the country, according to GoDucks.com.
Weather permitting — rain may play a factor, believe it or not — the team squares off against Portland on Sunday.
Braving Washington. On the horizon for senior midfielder Scout Libke and Oregon soccer (7-8-2, 2-5-1) lies a tough two-game road trip against both Washington schools. Libke entered sole possession of ninth place on the program’s all-time career goals list and will look to add to that total this weekend.
Oregon first battles the Huskies (9-6-2, 2-5-1 Pac-12) before traveling to Pullman, Wash., to play Washington State (9-6-1, 3-4-1). Lost among Oregon’s losses has been the stellar play of its freshmen — Bend natives Kristen Parr and Maryn Beutler have combined for eight of the team’s 17 goals.
Goalkeeper Abby Steele has also played well, tallying 64 saves and a save percentage just under 80 percent.
News out of ESPN is that former head coach and Super Bowl champion Tony Dungy would pick Alabama over Oregon if the two were to meet for the national title. Eric Dungy, Tony’s son, plays wide receiver for the Ducks.
Saturday’s BCS shakedown will impact the Ducks regardless of whether Oregon handles Colorado.
