An apartment fire, started by a baseboard heater, caused an estimated $125,000 in damages to a East 19th Avenue restaurant and the apartment above it Monday morning.
The fire, which began above Beppe & Gianni’s Italian restaurant at 1695 E. 19th Ave., woke the apartment’s two residents shortly after midnight, according to a Eugene Fire Department press release.
The occupants escaped safely, with only one minor burn.
Eugene Fire crews quickly put out the blaze and attributed the fire to flammable materials being too close to the heater.
Officials said baseboard heaters will start fires if items such as clothes, paper or furniture get too close to them.
