Oregon women’s tennis (5-1) played host to an in-state opponent on Saturday, the University of Portland (1-3) and never gave it a chance as the Ducks defeated the Pilots 6-1 and improved to 4-0 at home.
Oregon’s dominance began immediately in the doubles round. Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons jumped to an early lead and never looked back in their 6-1 win. Hinata Furutani and Juliet Santitto fell behind early, but it didn’t matter. Virginia Crocker and Hadley Appling faced a back and forth battle before pulling ahead 6-3 to claim the doubles point for Oregon.
Portland put up a fight in the singles round, but the Ducks remained superior. Patsy Daughters had no trouble claiming her first set 6-1. She saw similar success in her second set and completed the sweep with a 6-2 win. Bridget Mihulka ran away with her first set, 6-0. Her opponent put up more of a fight in the second set, but she still completed the sweep with a 6-4 win.
Jagare fell behind early. She showed some fight in the middle but could not overcome her opponent, dropping the first set 6-2. It was a much tighter battle in the second set and Jagare pulled ahead 6-4 to force a third set, which she ran away with, 6-1.
Symons trailed early in her first set. She came back to tie it at four, but still fell short 7-5. She jumped ahead in her second set before her opponent came back to claim Portland’s only point of the match.
Furutani was in a close one early, but pulled ahead late to win her first set 6-3. She fell behind early in her second set, but tied it at three. They were in a deuce when Furutani claimed the tiebreaker 7-6.
Crocker was also in a close battle, through her entire first set, and pulled ahead at the end for a 7-5 win. She took an early lead in her second set and never turned back, winning 6-1 to claim the match for Oregon.
The Ducks return to action Feb. 14 in a doubleheader at home against UC Riverside and Seattle University. The first match is scheduled for 10:00 AM.
