Oregon women’s tennis (8-3) put up a tremendous fight against the Arizona Wildcats (7-5), but fell short in the end, 4-3 to close out the Red Blue Invite.
Unlike most tennis matches, this one opened with singles.
Olivia Symons had some competition in her match, but had no trouble standing her ground. She won 6-3 in her first set, and 6-4 in her second to get Oregon on the board first.
Bridget Mihulka struggled a lot in her match. Her opponent blew her away in the first set 6-1. She did a little better in her second set, but her opponent still rose above her, winning 6-3 to put Arizona on the board.
Tilde Jagare went back and forth with her opponent throughout their match. Her opponent dominated the first set 6-1. Jagare responded nicely in the second set with a 6-4 win, before being shut out in the final set to lose her match.
Juliet Santitto had a slow start to her match. Her opponent dominated 6-2 in the first set, but it was all Santitto from there. She caught fire in her second set, winning 6-1. Then she maintained the momentum in the final set, winning 6-3.
Hinata Furutani started strong in her first set, winning 6-1, but her opponent took over from there. She was defeated 6-2 in the second set. She put up a bit of a fight in the final set, but still fell short, 6-4.
Virginia Crocker was leading 5-1 in her first set when her match was called in order to move on to doubles, which would decide the match.
There, Furutani and Santitto had no problem in their match, winning 6-1. Crocker and Hadley Appling were in a battle, but fell short 6-4. Jagare and Symons were also in a close match before ultimately losing 6-4 to clinch doubles point and the match for the Wildcats.
The Ducks will return home and host the Maryland Terrapins on March 6 at 11:30 a.m. to kick off Big Ten play.
