AZUSA, Calif. — No. 2 Oregon acrobatics and tumbling’s title hopes ended with its loss to No. 3 Quinnipiac in the NCATA Championships semifinals on Friday, but the Ducks officially qualified for 12 event finals with their quarterfinal win over Gannon. The top four scores from the quarterfinal round in each heat qualify for event finals, which will be contested Sunday.
In acro, Cassidy Cu and Angelica Martin’s five and seven-element heats will both be in contention for national titles. The pair qualified for last year’s event final as freshmen, where they finished third of five qualifiers with a 9.750. Oregon is the reigning seven-element champion, but did it with a different pair — Bella Swarthout and Bethany Glick — a year ago.
In pyramid, the Ducks qualified both their inversion and synchronized pyramids, but won’t have a chance to defend their open pyramid title from a year ago. Oregon scored 9.775 against Gannon in that heat, the fifth-best score of the day. Last year’s inversion pyramid finished third in finals after qualifying, but the synchronized pyramid is up for a title for the first time since 2022.
All three toss heats qualified after the Ducks put together a 28.15-point event against the Golden Knights on Thursday. Last year saw the Ducks finish second in both the 450 Salto and synchronized heats; open toss, which won the 2024 title, is back in contention after missing out last season.
Five of the Ducks’ six tumbling heats will return to the mat for event titles, including all three combined passes. The Ducks’ quad pass qualified with an 8.575 — their lowest score of the season to that point, albeit with two extra judges watching. Shea Barnes and Addison Brodie spoke Thursday night about the resilience they’ve seen in a group that has changed over the course of the season.
Event finals are set for 10 a.m. on April 26.
