With the Eugene Marathon taking over the city today, it was no surprise that the Ducks wanted in on the action as they ran past the Penn State Nittany Lions in a 5-0 shutout win to secure the series sweep.
No. 19 Oregon baseball (32-11, 15-6 Big Ten) shutout Penn State (12-29, 5-16 Big Ten) 5-0 today on a strong performance from pitcher Miles Gosztola (6.1 IP, 7 K, 0 ER, 3 H). Drew Smith (3-3, 1 RBI, HR, 2B) and Burke-Lee Mabeus (3-3, 2 RBI, HR, 2 2B) were lights out at the plate in the final game of the series.
Gosztola got off to a rough start after allowing back to back singles from left fielder Jayden Davis and designated hitter Michael Anderson. He bounced back right away with back to back strikeouts, painting the outside zone with off speed pitches to set up the fastball.
Like leftover lasagna, the Ducks offense took a bit to warm up all the way against Isaiah Shayter after only getting two hits in the first three innings. On the defensive side of things, the Ducks were holding it down through the fourth, only allowing three hits in that span. Through four, Gosztola had struck out three and made an interesting play on the mound after a comebacker knocked his glove out of his hand before he made the throw to first for the out.
Smith pumped up the home crowd with a first pitch home run in the bottom of the fourth. The homer got the offense going, prompting a single from Angel Laya before a four pitch walk from Maddox Molony. Mabeus sent home Laya shortly after the walk with an RBI double to put runners on second and third with no outs.
Naulivou Lauaki Jr sent home the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly near the foul pole in right before Penn State head coach Mike Gambino made the call to the pen for Kyle Emmons for his second appearance of the series.
In the fifth, Smith stayed hot at the plate with a two out double to set up an RBI single from Laya to extend the lead to four heading into the sixth.
Tempers flared between Gambino and the officiating crew in the middle of sixth inning after the home plate umpire lost track of the count and called a strikeout one strike too early. Gambino was promptly ejected from the game after getting in the face of multiple umpires. Following the ejection, the Ducks snagged an insurance run on a leadoff solo homer from Mabeus in the bottom half of the sixth.
After allowing two runners to get on base to start the seventh, Gosztola exited the game with Gabe Howard getting the nod from the bullpen. Howard was able to work his way out of the jam in the seventh before getting pulled for Cooper Markham in the eighth.
Cooper Strawn came in at the top of the ninth to close things out, but after letting on two runners with only one out, head coach Mark Wasikowski brought out Leo Uelmen. He managed to strike out one on his way to secure the shutout.
The Ducks will take on the Gonzaga University Bulldogs on Tuesday at 2:05 p.m. at PK Park.
